Hi There,
Thank you very much for your email.
The Social Democrats fully support these policy calls, and they are reflected in our manifesto:
Survivors of Mother & Baby Homes, as well as many other victims and survivors of State wrongdoing, are further wronged by the State because of its reticence to apologise to, and adequately redress, victims of state wrongdoing. In Government, we will revisit the Commission of Inquiry legislation from 2004 to ensure that the basis for State responses is grounded in Human Rights and Equality.
We have been consistent in calling out the government for their failure to secure redress funds from religious orders, which you can read more about here: https://www.socialdemocrats.ie/govt-fails-to-secure-financial-contribution-from-religious-bodies-towards-mother-and-baby-homes-redress/
I hope this clarifies my position on the need for all survivors of mother and baby homes to receive adequate redress for their suffering.
I will fight for survivors in the next Dáil, and they will be a priority for my party if part of the next government. I’d really appreciate your vote to help me get there. Please let me know if you have any questions!
