GE2024 Evie Nevin

As an adoptee myself, I deeply empathise with the survivors of Mother and Baby Institutions and understand the profound pain and injustices they continue to face. My personal experience fuels my commitment to ensuring that no survivor is left behind or denied the recognition and support they deserve. If elected, I will prioritise the following actions to address the ongoing exclusions for survivors: Expanding Eligibility for Redress I will advocate for the immediate removal of the six-month residency requirement from the redress scheme. Every individual who spent time in Mother and Baby Institutions, including those who were boarded out, deserves to be recognised and included. Enhanced Medical Supports I will push for all mothers and survivors of these institutions to receive enhanced medical cards, ensuring access to necessary healthcare services and recognising the long-term impacts of their experiences. Right to Records and Truth Survivors must have unimpeded access to their personal records and information. I will work to ensure all records are protected, digitised, and accessible, safeguarding their right to truth and justice. Accountability from Religious Orders It is unacceptable that many religious orders have yet to contribute fully to redress schemes. I will support legislation compelling them to do so and preventing the dissipation or concealment of their assets. Protecting Sites of Historical Significance I will champion the preservation and respectful commemoration of Mother and Baby Home sites, ensuring their significance is not erased but serves as a reminder of the survivors’ resilience and Ireland’s commitment to justice. As someone who has lived with the complexities of adoption in Ireland, I feel a deep personal connection to this cause. I will work tirelessly to ensure survivors are heard, respected, and provided with the justice and support they deserve. Thank you for holding candidates accountable on this critical issue.
